Its hydrochloric acid content improves digestion in the stomach. Its bile content emulsifies fats so that fat-splitting enzymes can go to work on them (a must for those with no gallbladder). Hydrochloric acid and bile also destroy gastrointestinal parasites. Ultragest's pancreatin provides enzymes that break down proteins, fats, and starches. Papain is a vegetable enzyme (from raw papaya) that helps break down proteins. Peppermint soothes the digestive tract, reducing flatulence.
Ultragest’s hydrochloric acid and pepsin go to work immediately on food in the stomach. Its bile and pancreatin also start to work in the stomach, but their action is minimal there because they work primarily on food constituents that have already been broken down by stomach enzymes. The bile and pancreatin become fully active when they reach the small intestine.
When the food mass reaches the duodenum, its acidity (enhanced by Ultragest’s HCl) triggers the pancreas to release its own pancreatin plus bicarbonate (to provide an alkaline environment). Thus, the pancreatin in Ultragest adds to the body’s natural production of pancreatic enzymes. [For further details, see Digestion: Inner Pathway to Health.]
| | Benefits & How it Works: Hydrochloric acid is not an enzyme. Its role is to provide the acid medium needed for digestion to take place in the stomach. Hydrochloric acid helps to convert pepsinogen (an inactive enzyme precursor) into the active enzyme, pepsin. It is the pepsin which starts the breakdown of proteins in the stomach. Without adequate hydrochloric acid and pepsin, the body cannot break down proteins into their constituent amino acids. These amino acids, in turn, are the building blocks from which bodily cells, antibodies, hormones and enzymes are built. Here we have a “catch 22" situation. If our bodies do not produce enough enzymes, then they cannot break down protein sufficiently to manufacture more enzymes. Supplementary digestive enzymes can help to break this vicious cycle.
Amino acids are also needed to surround or “chelate” the mineral ions liberated from our food and supplements during digestion. Without an adequate supply of amino acids, some minerals tend to stick against the intestinal wall rather than pass through it – because of opposing electromagnetic charges. The amino acids that surround a mineral ion neutralize its charge, enabling it to be absorbed. Thus, a poor supply of hydrochloric acid and pepsin can impair our ability to absorb and utilize minerals. Some people rely on amino acid chelated mineral supplements to compensate for poor mineral absorption. Doing so, however, only bypasses the underlying digestive weakness. It makes more sense to take supplementary hydrochloric acid and enzymes to help the body utilize minerals from the rest of the diet as well as from supplements.
When food leaves the stomach, it is only partially digested. In the duodenum it is mixed with pancreatin, contained in the juice secreted by the pancreas. Pancreatin is a complex enzyme that contains proteases (for digesting proteins), amylases (for digesting starches), and lipases (for digesting fats). Also in the duodenum, fatty foods are mixed with bile, which is produced in the liver and stored (and concentrated) in the gall bladder. Bile is not an enzyme. It is an emulsifier that breaks down fats into droplets tiny enough for the lipase enzymes to work on them. Without sufficient bile, undigested fats enter the intestines where they combine with minerals to form insoluble soaps, which are constipating. During constipation, putrefaction can produce dangerous cancer-causing substances (e.g., apcholic acid, 3-methyl cholanthrene). Thus, those who produce insufficient bile – and especially those who have had their gall bladders removed – are at greater risk of colon cancer and degenerative conditions caused by poor mineral absorption. Supplementary bile salts can help to reduce this risk and to restore proper digestion. Almost everyone over age 40 can benefit from digestive support. Some of the more obvious signs of needing it include burping, belching, bloating, flatulence, halitosis, nausea, constipation, a burning sensation in the stomach, and/or a full, sluggish feeling after eating a heavy meal of meat or other protein.
| | Dosages & Ingredients: Suggested Use: 1 to 4 tablets with each meal, depending on the content of protein and/or fat, and how weak the person's digestion is (usually a function of age). Take Ultragest immediately after a meal. Experiment to find the least number of tablets necessary to eliminate all digestive discomfort.
Ingredients:
1 tablet contains:
Betaine Hydrochloride....... 88 mg
Pepsin..................... 188 mg
Pancreatin 8x..............27.5 mg
Bile ........................88 mg
Papain .....................122 mg
Bromelain....................44 mg
Peppermint...................66 mg
Providing 1,320,000 units of Protease activity, 5400 of Amylase activity and, 1,100 units of Lipase activity
Self Test: First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, take 1 Ultragest tablet. Next morning take 2 tablets in the same way. On the third morning, take 3 – and so on. Keep on increasing the number of tablets until you experience a slight burning sensation in the stomach. Then, back off by one tablet and that is your optimum daily intake (e.g., if you get a burn on 5 tablets, then 4 is your daily amount). Apportion this daily amount according to how difficult those meals are to digest (e.g., for 4 daily -- 1 with breakfast, 1 with lunch and 2 with dinner).
